We are a group of concerned citizens opposed to a large mixed-use building that is being proposed for our small village of Mount Horeb, WI (population approx. 7700). Our goal has been to raise awareness in the community about this proposed development and to encourage residents to use their voice to oppose it as well, with the ultimate goal of stopping it from being built.
We are opposed to this proposed development because it is in the heart of our small historic downtown business district, and it will compromise the small-town charm that Mount Horeb has been able to maintain with decades of previous work by many citizens in village government.
The building is simply too big for the proposed location. It fails to meet numerous zoning code regulations, and the developer is seeking exceptions.
We believe the out-of-scale building would ruin our small-town charm and hurt tourism, which is of critical importance to our economy. With Mount Horeb’s proximity to Madison (20 miles), we are a common day-trip destination for many. They come for the trolls, the unique shops, and the small-town feel. This proposed building would compromise that. We firmly believe that the 4 block span of Main Street should be retail/commercial focused, and that 40+ apartment units are not optimally suited for downtown Main Street.
The proposed building will lead to traffic congestion, lack of parking for our businesses and the customers who shop at them, and danger to pedestrians. This dense project would require entry on 3rd St, a residential street that simply cannot safely handle the amount of moving and parked cars this project will bring. We are struggling with each of these issues already, this building will complicate these issues further.
Our economy and the health of our downtown district affects all of us, whether you live near the downtown or not.

A bulk mailer landed at every address in the 53572 zip code on November 7th, with instructions to fill out the postcard and return to the Village Board prior to the 11/19 Plan Commission Meeting.
The results: On 11/19, a crew of eight landed at the Municipal Building to count the number of postcard/mailer responses. We collected a few more at the Plan Commission meeting that evening. Ten more were received at the Municipal Building the following day.
The number of postcards returned totaled 751. The number of respondents (some postcards contained multiple names) totaled 968. Even though the option was not provided, an additional 5 postcards were returned with notations stating support of the JG proposal.
To recap: 5,000 postcards were distributed with a 19.5% response rate. 99.5% of those responding were opposed to the JG proposal.
*This postcard mailer was created and funded by private citizens, not the Preserve Historic Mount Horeb organization, but we do support their efforts.
Visit: Open House Imports - at 308 E Main St, Tue-Sunday to sign a petition to show your opposition to the JG development. We have petitions for both village residents and non-residents.
Consider running for village government to prevent a proposal such as this from ever getting this far in the process in the future
Signs can be picked up on the porch at 104 N 3rd St. Please serve yourself by leaving $5 per sign in the plastic envelope in the box.
